you need a good potting mix. Every gardener has thier own preference...you can get advice from a master gardener at the county extension office as which or what to use. There are many recipes out on the internet. You will need certain sized containers for the different plants. Tomatoe plants need 5 gallon of growing medium, in a container 12 inches high To acomidate the roots. Cucumbers may be 3 gallon of potting mix.

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking, but I think you are asking what is the best food to grow in containers? Honestly, pretty much anything can be grown in containers. Herbs do great, tomatoes, potatoes.. I'd stay away from things like corn since it needs several rows to propagate properly. And long, vining plants might be more hassle.

I love my terracotta pots and wooden planters made from either cedar or pine. They help maintain moisture and look pretty.

Now that you know what containers like, I also love herbs in containers because they contain their growth.
