Herbs do great, tomatoes, potatoes.. I'd stay away from things like corn since it needs several rows to propagate properly. And long, vining plants might be more hassle.

I love my terracotta pots and wooden planters made from either cedar or pine. They help maintain moisture and look pretty.
Now that you know what containers like, I also love herbs in containers because they contain their growth.
