I would first paint it another colour. Something that blends better like an off-white or charcoal. Then I would replace the cover with frosted Perspex full of little round LED lights or strips of small LED lights.
We had one like this, and we're able to completely remove it and install a track light, all for under $100. If you don't want to replace it, I would paint the wood to blend with the color of the ceiling and the panel with one a little plainer.
One idea is to paint a fun color the other is to cover with contact paper, there are some wonderful prints
If it is a wood frame with a piece of removable plastic that diffuses the light, you can remove it, have a piece of clear cut to size, Lowes can do that. Lowes sells a variety of stick on, translucent, material that is generally used on windows for privacy. There are some that look like stained glass with beautiful designs. You just adhere it to the clear plexiglass piece and attach it back to the light frame.
If the frame is wood, give it a fresh coat of paint. If it is metal, you can purchase wood molding, at lowes, and attach it with liquid nails.
This will allow you to get a nice update for a fraction of the cost of a new light fixture.

Remove the plastic. Take out the florescent fixture. Decide on either track or can lights. Line the interior ceiling with beautiful wood strips leaving cutouts for your desired lights. A whole new look.
Paint the wood to match your kitchen, then use a stencil to put a design on it!
i agree with pairing to match the ceiling so it blends in and isn't such an eyesore!
TAKE out the lights & put cord lights in it. U can simply hot glue them into place or use eye screws that fit the circumference of the cord. Get some frosted window paper (peel & stick) & adhere it to the glass part. Put some legs on the underside (about 5 inch tall legs) & use it as a drawing (tracing) table for arts & crafts. If you want a tilt to the table, put the back legs about 5 inches & the front legs about 2-3 inches (painted PVC pipe will work well or cut stair railing posts). Use it in your lap while sitting in your favorite chair or on a table, desk, etc. :)
paint it also can use stencil get a piece of plexie from home depot cut the same size and frost it with and how ever you like it will look beautiful
First you want to paint all four exterior sides with different colored fluorescent paint. Then alternate the position of colors and paint the four interior sides. Finally extract the current light tube and replace them with black light bulbs and Vwa-la, your are back in business with something your neighbors will love to talk about.
Take it down go to a restore store and get a new light fixture I have seen nice ones at a good price
Her box light DOES match her cabinets...painting I think would make it stand out more. I have the same light..and same color cabinets...still thinking....
If you have always wanted to replace it with can lights like me I might have found a much less expensive solution. Check out Lowes Project Source 7.4" 2 pack White or Brushed Nickel Flush Mount Energy Star LED lights Item #749834 Model #CLL56-2WW. They are hardwired into a standard 4" electrical box and are rated for wet for indoor or outdoor. pack of 2 for $34.98. The bulbs are included and are integral. The ratings are 4.8 out of 5. We are going to tear out our ugly fluorescent box and install new 4" boxes and have a whole new look in our kitchen. Yay!!!
If this fixture is hanging above an island, I would hang chains from the four corners and attach a metal grid on the the chains (like a shelf hanging directly below the light). Using "S" hooks, you can make a hanging pot rack.
