Do you know of a method to lighten marble countertops?

I don't think there is a removable layer but that are resurfacing kits for marble in home improvement stores.
You can use one-stop enamel sign paint and repaint/marblize over existing marble or granite. Just don't forget to seal it after it is thoroughly dry.
Marble is solid through and through and so cannot be lightened, however you could cover it with a lighter material but not likely to be the best to do. Can you add some brightness to your area in some other way such as painting the cabinets for contrast or adding bright colored accessories in your kitchen area? I'd think long and hard before I'd mess with real marble countertops and perhaps downgrade the value of your home.
