Using pallet wood sections and command hook tabs, stick then on as a backsplash. they can easily be removed when you move out.
distressing the paint is always a good place to start... where is the red?
Do you have an area you could use as an accent wall? If so get a material (cotton's good) with a rustic vibe and use it as a wall paper. Just use liquid starch as your glue and it is easily removable when you move. (it can be used on cabinets too but that is a lot of work.) Wooden farmhouse signs really work too. Good luck.
Have you thought about removable wallpaper? It can go a long way in changing wall colors countertops, etc.
I recently updated my kitchen with a peel & stick wallpaper. This is a great rental project because it is inexpensive and easily removable. You can check mine out here http://beautyforasheshome.com/faux-subway-tile-backsplash/
