Mid century modern is great furniture for small spaces. Iron framed beds are good for small bedrooms. Light colors work well and furniture with feet so that light can travel under the piece.

You could try for pieces that serve dual functions like a long table that is part desk, murphy bed instead of a regular one. Also, go with a larger sectional sofa without upholstered side chairs, and use a good-sized coffee table with no end tables. Use floor lamps behind the sofa in place of lamps on end tables. Make one wall a focal point with a big colorful painting. Pick up those colors in a few throw pillows on the sofa. Maybe a colorful rug under the coffee table. Less furniture is good, but the pieces don't have to be small. Good Luck. Oh, and you don't need to spend a fortune.
