Hod do I maximize space in a slanted small coat closet?

You could try adding a couple horizontal 2 x 4s wood far enough apart that a pair of shoes would be able to sit on the edge of the 2 x 4s without sliding down. Hope this helps.

This space is tight! I have puzzled over it quite a bit before answering. I am not sure what kind of storage/space you're wanting. Since there seems to be only one or two full length coats, you might consider custom shelving above that slant from the stairs. Find an over the door hanger or nice hook to hold the full length coat(s) on the back of the door. Then, I'd start at a height just below the lowest jacket and put a shelf there - making sure it leaves plenty of space near the door for the coats. Continue down with however many shelves you can fit. (set the shelves on small rails attached to the sides of the closet so you don't need to brace the shelves at the back.) Plan it all out first so you have some idea of how it will look and work - and what to buy. You might consider extra shelves above the rod, too. Hope that helps!

I agree to add some wood strips to the support to allow for shoe storage because it would be basically the same kind of concept if you bought one of the racks. I would also consider raising the hanging bar slightly just to give you a little more hanging room. Don't forget the back of the closet door. You could also get an organizing system on the back of the door to either house the shoes or hang the longer coats there as suggested above.

I would start by completely emptying the closet and consider whether or not you need all that is currently in there. You can put shelf items in clear plastic containers to keep them organized. If you change your coat hangers to slim ones that will help with space as the plastic ones take up a lot of the rod space. Screw 1x2's to the angled bottom for shoes. Over the door shoe holders could be used to store smaller misc. items like scarves and gloves or extra shoes. You may want to consider removing the shelf and rod and re-configuring with shelves on one side and a rod or double rod on the other side. Then using an over the door hook for the few long coats. Lots of options!

First you need to pull everything out. Remove all the empty hangers. Pick up one of those "Wonder Hangers" (As Seen On TV). Put together the light weight items separate from the heavier coats - that makes it easier to rotate them seasonally. Get three old shoe boxes (or boot box is better if you have). Wrap the boxes in butcher block paper and label each one for Hats - Gloves - Scarves. Get a Rubbermaid bin that fits the remaining space on the shelf and label it OTHER. Once things don't fit - they probably don't belong in that closet and you can force your family to find another place to stash stuff.
