Chickens eat everything! You should have made a run on both sides of the henhouse, then chicks can use one while you plant your garden in the other, then switch the following year....it will be all fertilized! I let mine run the lawn while the garden was growing....open the gate and they can demolish in no time!
Sorghum works well but you must let it get started before the chickens are put in the pen. It needs to be at least 12 inches high, plant it in rows and leave about a foot between rows.
Mine love Wisteria..~!!!
herbs are a nice choice too -
Oregano
Good to know! Thanks
A friend has a part of her chicken run with a wire fence around it...in the middle...she has planted some wormwood and some mustard greens with they love....when it gets large enough it goes close to where they can peck at both of them...it fixes any worms they may have and they only eat it when they need it. she keeps the top covered too and waters the plants when she changes the water for the chickens...meanwhile they just run around it in the middle of the run.
My girls love collards , kale and broccolI leaves (not the buds) You do need to protect the plants so they get a chance to grow. They also love grapes.
My chickens eat everything I plant...and all the accompanying bugs.
I put in hops vines that grow up and over everything very quickly. The chix will pick at the leaves but if you protect the lower 2' or so with a barrier (i use bamboo stakes and hardware cloth) the plant will be fine. Gives them nice shade, attracts some tasty bugs and looks nice. Everyone is happy
