Spirea will work for you but they do have to be pruned in the early spring before the new growth appears.

I'm not sure where you could get them but I remember as a child my Gramma Marie had beautiful 4 o'clock plants in our back yard. The thing that's cool about them is they have very pretty purple flowers that open at 4 o'clock - hence the name. Had some where we used to live too. Very easy, just water as needed and they are perennials and multiply like crazy.

I garden in zone 7. Not sure how these shrubs will do for you but you can it them out. Clethra, Mahonia, Cherry Laurel, Kerria, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Blueberry, Fothergilla, Aucuba, Itea are all good shade shrubs. Blossoms, fragrant, and some have berries for the birds.
