The easiest way and ultimately the least expensive, is to take a soil sample to your County Agricultural Extension Office. Call them, they will tell you how to do this and some offices even furnish bags. By getting your soil tested, you know what your soil needs or has too much of and you don't go spend money on additives you don't need. The test lets you know what minerals and the pH of your soil so you don't have to guess.Helpful Reply -

I started with an online question for soil improvement. One first has to determine what soil is acidic, alkaline etc. Then add leaves, baking soda, etc according to what your soil is and what it needs. Online sites can take you through the entire process.Helpful Reply -

I go the lazy man's way with compost made from mostly shredded leaves. We're coming to heavy leaf season here in the northeast. Since I have to clear the driveway anyway, the leaves all go to the garden. After a year the earth worms have done their magic. That said, I agree with Gram and Sal that if you are looking to add chemical amendments it is best to have the soil tested first, otherwise you are guessing.Helpful Reply -

Along with having the soil tested - save vegetable (raw) scraps and what you cut off , along with egg shells to add to soil.Helpful Reply- See 3 previous

You can take samples to your local Department of Agriculture, and they will analyze for you, and give you recommendations.Helpful Reply -

I think you my just want to buy a bag of soil-cheap and much easier for your needs.Soil pH. Soil pH is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity in soils. pH levels range from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral, below 7 acidic and above 7 alkaline. The optimal pH range for most plants is between 5.5 and 7.0; however, many plants have adapted to thrive at pH values outside this range.Helpful Reply -

Since you only have a bucket of soil, not a backyard of dirt, empty out the bucket and buy some planting soil. It will have to be replaced every couple years if you continue to plant the same type of plant.Helpful Reply -

Go buy another bag of potting soil. the kind with Miracle-Gro is good. Throw the old soil outJust because a plant dies doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the soil. Other reasons could apply.Helpful Reply -
