What is the best grass to plant with dogs?

We have a tiny back yard which has a privacy fence. Because of the fence, various areas of the back yard get some sun during the day, but mostly at high noon. We have 3 small to medium sized dogs who use this area all day. We are located on the Gulf Coast in Alabama. The original grass we planted is almost entirely gone. Any suggestions as to what type of grass could withstand this abuse? Something other than the typical grass would be fine, too. Most of our neighbors have give in and put in concrete over their side yards and some have even put in concrete in their backyards.

We did have St. Augustine in an earlier house, but it got full sun all day. I wasn't sure it would do well since it gets so much shade. In our old yard we actually got darker spots where the dogs peed and it looked even healthier. Thanks!

No Grass tolerates the Acidic nature left by your dogs.

The best option and most cost effective is to get a "Dog Rock" and put it in their water bowl.

Dog Rocks are a naturally occurring paramagnetic igneous rock. When placed in water, they will help purify the water by removing nitrates, ammonia & harmful trace elements like tin and copper giving your dog a cleaner source of water as well as lowering the amount of nitrates found in his diet. This will in turn lower the amount of nitrates expelled in his urine. The overload of nitrates in pet urine that causes the lawn to yellow.

The other option is to have a PEE Rock. It is a rock you put "wolf urine" sent on and the dog will go there to pee more often than randomly on the lawn. Put several around your property.
