I would use a spray paint for metal-preferably in a dark color like black or brown. The birds will come back to it. Once the paint has dried well there is not much odor. They are more interested in the food inside.
I have several that I sprayed with Rust-oleum exterior spray paint
( available at Walmart, Kmart, Home Depot, etc.). They offer a variety of beautiful colors. The birds always return year after year. Because I leave mine up year round the paint color can fade. When it does, a quick spray brightens up the finish easily.
Thanks have already taped it off. .husband had John Deere green and yellow. .I went for the silver he used on my tire rims. .the silver will make it shine in the sun. .Thanks again. .
