I do not like the new painted look, any suggestions? No metallic please as the room has enough of that. The room needs lightening up. I was thinking about using chalk paint. I am open to ideas...

I really like the black; it shows off the detail against the background. What specifically don't you like? Is it too shiny? Too new looking?

@Trudy Thanks Trudy. You are right and I decided they look best as is. They are just a heavy looking chair and must space is very light but since they aren't going anywhere, I will live with them as is. Appreciate your feedback.

Krylon makes a spray chalk paint that will be perfect for those chairs. Not sure what color you are looking to do, but I don't think they have purple. They do have many shades of grays, blues and creamy white. You can get it at Michaels- they also make a spray finish coat as well. Make sure you use a coupon!

I have decided to leave well enough alone, but your tip is valuable for future projects. Many thanks, Sue.

I personally like the black as well, however if you choose to change the color I think you would be better off using spray paint.

You could also change the cushions/covers for a different look.

Go ahead and Krylon chalk spray paint. It will soften the metal look. Lots of color choices. if you don't like it repaint. Easy.

I would also keep the black metal, and change the cushions to a more vibrant shade.

I'm not a fan of black or metal. I noticed the frame behind the chairs has a metallic look. Why not trim the scrolling with a color to match and leave the rest black. I recently used Rust-Oleum;s Hammered copper on an old black floor lamp. Gives it some nice texture. Also, change your cushion and/or pillow colors.

    how about an antiqued white?
    • Amy Amy on Feb 23, 2016
@Lavonne Thanks Lavonne, that was the direction I was headed but decided to keep they as they are. Probably easier to change out pillows

Antique white would look good, but I think the black would look better. They'd look great with bright colored cushions, in a Moroccan type print, if you're not afraid of color, if so, you could tone it down to a print you like, but I'd definitely change the cushions.

Grey can be a nice neutral also rather than black.

It's hard to tell if your one wall color and the chair cushions are a mauve tone or if the cushions are brown & white. I love the black or hammered looks with the cushions being of vibrant colors however you want to change from that so maybe paint the chairs with Krylon's Gloss Iris which is like a deeper periwinkle and then add cushions with softer purple heather & white mix. If your up to a vibrant pop of color why not paint the chairs a cinnamon color then add cushions with browns, reds, oranges, yellow & tans.

Thanks for your feedback Fran. I have decided I am leaving the chairs black and will prob change out cushions.

Get a estimate from a auto body shop and have them paint it, it needs prepped right, and might take a long while to sand it and prime them, if you miss any area it will peel off. They can paint any color you want, and ask them about chalk paint. It will be done by pro cost some more but worth it. If me would try to have them match your headboard in your room or is it a screen, color you use if you want to move to another room would color work there too. Beautiful chairs.

I agree with you that leaving the chair frames black is going to be the easier. I think the room from what I can see needs a pop of colour and that the chair cushion's will do that. Pls share with us what you end up deciding, we would love to see the results.

I see your walls are lavender. And, I know you said you don't need anymore metallic, but that gold mirror calls out to me. What if you paint them that gold, making it crackle as the mirror seems to be. Then find an eggplant color velvet or velveteen to cover the seat cushions. If you don't want the gold, I think black with the eggplant would be fine. The eggplant color is so elegant---well, I think so, anyway. Let us know what you decide.
  • Chalk paint would not be my first choice. I would use a spray paint made for metal in a color you like. Look for Rustoleum.
