The footstool is painted now with a gloss, how can I cover it well with another paint? The footstool is open underneath.

Chalk paint will go over pretty much anything. After, you can finish it by waxing it or spraying with a clear varnish.

@Thank You Rosemary My main concern is that any kind of paint would flake off when used as a footstool. I need a paint that adheres well to this gloss finish it has now. Will chalk paint do that?

Spray paint would work as well.

Chalk paint adheres well on very glossy surfaces and doesn't flake off at all. I generally use Annie Sloan paint and find it very hard-wearing. Their website has lots of helpful information. I don't think chalk paint comes in an aerosol but I use it all the time with an electric spray gun - it must be watered down.

I would think a spray paint would be the easiest way to paint a wicker piece. There are so many colors and finishes you're bound to find one you like. I don't believe the existing gloss finish will be an issue. You can always give it a light sanding and then a good cleaning before you begin with the new color.
