Any advice?What can I do about painting bumpy walls?

I have really bumpy walls that lead up to really bumpy ceilings I tried 3 different kinds of tape but try as I may I still get paint on the ceiling any advice on something else I can do other than sanding

What type of walls? What era is the house. May be old lathe and plaster, I have sculptured plaster in my mom's house - a pain to clean and paint, but I do like the look.
I would use a brush to cut in around the edges - less chance of getting on ceiling. And then repaint ceiling last.
