Hi Mary, yes you can! I would recommend using an oil based primer first though before putting your latex paint.

I recommend using milk paint as a primer it is better than reg. primer I have used both and the milk paint worked much better I chose a color near to my finish color.. and then paint right over it..

Definitely use a primer first. You'll save yourself a lot of time and hassle and won't have to worry about the 'bleed-through' you'd likely see otherwise.
