Yes just rough it up lightly with sand paper before you paint.

Yes, you can scuff with steel wool then clean with denatured alcohol. Tape off everything and drape cloth if you are going to spray paint it. My nephew did his 3 years ago, gold to silver, and it still looks great. He used RustOleum brand.

Im sure you can if its the alluminum frame you want to paint, you will have to make sure they are very clean. Use a good oil based paint

Rustoleum now makes a spray paint primer that you do not have to sand the metal.

Use TSP or Krud Kutter to clean the metal. Paper off all the glass and bottom of the shower, you do not want over spray anywhere. including the walls.

Use painters tape as close to the metal as you can, Use Rustoleum self etching primer let dry completely. Then use the Rustoleum color or your choice. Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area. Let dry for at least 3 days before use.

 I know that Rustoleum makes different finishes such as, brushed, hammered,etc. in a wide variety of colors. Be sure to get the product made especially for bathrooms. I'm assuming there will be a lot of steam involved. Also, you might want to go lightly over the brass with sandpaper to give the new paint a surface to stick to.
