Can oil based fence stain be stored in a plastic container?

I have some left over stain that I would like to save...and wondered if I could use a plastic Coffee Mate container with a screw on lid to store the oil based fence stain in?

With the consideration of the stain reacting to the plastic, or the stain degrading, I would invest in a small metal can (paint section-home depot) for about $3.00. This may help: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/store-deck-stain-36068.html

No! The oil or solvents can react with the plastic. The reaction will cause heat and can cause a fire.

Better to keep oil-based paint in an air tight metal container.
