Do I need to seal cinder blocks before painting?

I have seen so many pretty patio projects with cinder blocks that people have stenciled or just painted nice colors but when I tried to spray paint mine, the paint just got absorbed :( Do I need to apply something to keep the paint on the surface?

  • Yes, as with all paint jobs they need to be cleaned and primed. Then your paint will be nice and crisp.

Hello. There are several products out there that will seal your concrete prior to painting. A popular one is called Seal-Krete. It is sold at your local home store or online. This must be applied prior to painting because concrete is porous and, as you discovered, concrete will absorb your paint without that sealer applied first. Good luck!

it's best to seal them if you want your paint to stay on unless you want to repaint each year. the cinder blocks hold dampness and will reject the paint, plus you have the weather that will help peal the paint off if there is no sealer. It's your call.

Lol, no I don't want to repaint each year ;) I think I will try looking into the sealer for my projects... I learn so much on Hometalk!

The cement is porus, it's soaking the paint right up, you need some type of sealer or primer to illimenate the problem.

Janet, thanks so much. This looks like exactly what I need to do (if only the darn snow would stop so I can get to working outside :)

  • We had three 75 degree days in a row, I left my house plants on the porch overnight and it snowed and froze killing them all!
