Sand it down to bare wood. Make a stain that will ‘grey’ the wood by filling a Mason Jar with steel wool then filling the jar to the top with vinegar. Because of the acidity of vinegar it will dissolve the steel wool. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Filter the stain with paint strainer available from Amazon or anywhere paint is sold.
Yes, you would need to sand down to raw wood to restain to a lighter color. Cannot stain lighter over darker.

Hi Peggy! I can tell you how to stain your dresser with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle.
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: Apply two coats of clear BOSS
Step three: Use our VooDoo Gel Stain in Up In Smoke for a gray stain
Step four: Use any of our clear coats or waxes for extra protection or a different style finish
No sanding required!
