You could use a gel stain over the old stain.
Yes to the Gel Stain. :) General Finishes has a Java Gel that is awesome! https://www.amazon.com/General-Finishes-JQ-Stain-quart/dp/B001DSY50Y/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=java+gel+stain&qid=1556502996&s=gateway&sr=8-2 Here is a link for it. They also carry gel stain in other colors if you don't like java.
you can check out my guide on how to apply gel stain here. :)
You can stain over stain with gel stain. Any good brand will work. You can go darker but not lighter. Minwax has instructions.

You could stain it or paint it!
Hello if you didn’t want to paint your curio products like 1-poly shades or 2-gel stain could change the wood color darker.
1-Here’s a link to look over the content and see if it’s a product that will meet your needs. It can be applied over existing existing poly finishes without any stripping or sanding. I find reviews and Q&A’s can often direct me towards the correct purchase. Hope this helps.
