How do I change the color of this glass mosaic lamp?

I would like to paint this glass Mosaic lamp I purchased it @ Pier 1 to a more jewel-toned color. Does anyone know what kind of paint to use?
What effect are you looking for? Paint on top of the glass will be flat and not glass-like at all. Any paint that would be glass-like, would show the original, red-orange color through it.
Can you disassemble the lamp and remove the mosaic pieces? That's how I would look at changing it; from the inside. You might be able to scrape the red-orange off of a backing piece and re-glue a different color of glass to it, then put it back together.

Just an FYI, any paint you use to do a full coverage is going to make the mosaic effect look weird because the grout-effect will be painted, too. For a jewel-tone, think about going with more than one color and using a light touch with spray paints if you don't want the whole thing looking a solid color when you're through.
