Add up to 3 ounces (1 oz bottle) of India Ink to one quart of chalk paint. This is the standard recipe for Annie Sloan chalk paint - other brands 'do' have a true black paint. American Paint Company has Cannonball, Maison Blanche has Wrought Iron.

CeCeCaldwell's Beckley Coal is a true black and can cover most things in only one coat. My definite go-to for black.

If you're mixing your own chalk paint, just have your paint store add extra black pigment to the paint. I've even had them give me some free pigment to mix in by going back and telling them that the black isn't black enough.

It will be black BUT when you prime it (with chalk) it will be more gray if you want to use it like a real chalk board. Just fyi.

Susan It's not for a chalkboard it's for a piece of furniture...I'm trying to achieve a dark black look not a dark charcoal look. Not sure what I need to do.

Just to toss out a different solution, maybe give milk paint a try? I know Miss Mustard Seed has a beautiful color called 'Typewriter' (http://www.missmustardseedsmilkpaint.com/colors/). If you want to skip the step of mixing the paint, General Finishes also has a lovely color called 'Lamp Black' (https://generalfinishes.com/retail-products/water-base-milk-paints-glazes/furniture-milk-paints#.VFa_evl4rnc). Milk paint is a super easy and forgiving paint, as well as non-toxic. Love it!
