How do you whitewash wood?

I am building a firescteen from wood and the directions say to whitewash the wood.

white wash is a term that means watered down white paint. When you use it you can still see the wood through the paint.

I mix 50% paint and 50% water. Brush it on, if it's still too white, wipe with a cloth damp or dry until you get the look you want.

Use 1/2 latex paint and 1/2 water, apply to raw wood (sand before whitewashing) and work in with a rag until you achieve desired effect. Wipe off any excess before it dries.
