Do I need to sand a piece of furniture before I use a gel stain?

    You need to st least wash down with TSP and then sand the sheen off.

    What is the brand of gel stain? I would check their website for instructions!

    The shinier the finish the more prep. work needed before refinshing; sanding then wiping/cleaning off depending on how much/shiny finish is on the piece

    It will depend on the wood you will be finishing. Sealer needs to be removed. You might be able to "sand" with fine steel wool instead of sandpaper. Clean with either TSP or denatured alcohol. Then you can proceed.

    Back before chalk paint...my daughter and I painted a dining table and chairs, then used a gel stain to antique it.

    It worked well, just took a while to dry completely. That's over 5 yrs ago and they still look amazing.
