In lieu of that, you might want to consider using tile/grout (many decorative types or plain ) as you would use for a back splash ... or a simple red/tan brick type. Heat would not be a significant issue, and there wouldn't be any hot sparks to worry about ...

I think you could paint it if you use chalk paint. It will need a sealer as well. The only thing that I worry about is sparks that could leave marks in the painted surface. I have a fireproof mat in front of my fireplace which works well.
