If you paint it you will have to do it every year it will chip off
Don't do it, but if you must, remember slate will absorb your paint and not always evenly. Better to seal it or use Stain Blocker and then do it.
Latex or epoxy paint generally adheres best on slate tiles. If the paint has a hard time spreading, add small amounts of paint thinner until you reach an easier consistency to work with.
Epoxy paint would be the best choice for this project.
