Let the Citristrip stay on the surface till the paint softens and bubbles. Then scrape the stripper off with a putty knife. Any residual paint can be sanded off.

Citristrip is the best product on the market.You may want to leave it on longer.
Apply the Citristrip, cover with plastic wrap (get it cheap at the Dollar Store), leave in place several hours or overnight, then use a stiff bristled brush to get into the grain of the wood. This should minimize time spent sanding whatever residue is left behind.
