there are some great all-in-one stains from Minwax that can stain and seal all in one coat. Check one of the big box stores, I would shy away from paint as you would have to repaint every so often from scratches or to match décor. But that is just me.
up to you and your style - I like to look of stained wood
Stain and seal would be my vote. The dings, nicks and scratches will add character over time. Paint would start to look a bit shabby but not chic. You have one lucky pup! 🐶
