Can I use interior latex paint to paint a sheet of wood for outside?
I am planning to paint a barn quilt pattern on a sheet of plywood to attach to my garage, and I need to know if I can use interior latex paint? I only need small amounts of several colors, and if I have to buy exterior paint then the cost will be much more since the smallest amount of exterior latex I can purchase is a quart size. The interior paint, however, comes in small sample pots. If the interior paint is not advisable, then can I use craft paints?

Betty on May 12, 2015Years ago, I made "yard art". I used interior paint and craft paint. I added two coats of exterior poly, and it worked fine.Helpful Reply

Juanita Bittle on May 13, 2015If you use interior paint you can seal it with Marine spar varnish. I would advise two coats.Helpful Reply

Kim Kilmer on May 13, 2015I use craft paint and interior paints to make outdoor projects. As suggested before, you must seal it with a clear finish. I prefer to use a clear spray finish. Also make sure the front and back are sealed. If moisture gets onto the back of the piece, it can cause the front paint and sealer to lift off.Helpful Reply

Lee on May 13, 2015You can buy the little 2 ounce bottles of craft paint that are made for exterior projects. More than one paint brand, lots of colors and cheap.Helpful Reply

Follow your H on May 13, 2015Do not use interior latex paint. It is not made to take the weather changes with heat, rain, etc. Use either exterior paint or craft paint. You can actually find the small craft paint bottles in an exterior formula now. You do NOT need to coat it with anything.Helpful Reply

Parle on May 13, 2015If you have already used it, then just spray it with the clear finish. My regular interior craft paints are all I have ever used. I've never had a problem with fading or chipping because of applied clear finish.Helpful Reply
