Citristrip a safe non-toxic remover
Paint - use paint remover gel.
Stain - tough. You'll need to sand down to the original wood.

I would start with paint stripper - Citristrip is my favorite. Then you may need to sand.
I like citristrip as well. It's a great paint stripper
