Use a mirror to reflect light, whether its natural or electric. Keep walls light colored, off white or beige (if you like warm tones) or light grey (if you like cooler tones) but don't be afraid to use some color with your artwork or room accessories. Bright white walls can look too clinical and stark creating glare and tension. With the textured walls, avoid shiny paints. Also consider different types of lighting,at different levels in the room rather than just one single 'flame-thrower' fixture in an attempt to light the entire room. It will create glare and deep shadows which will not give you the effect you want. Consider up lighting for dark corners and a reading light for sitting areas.
