I do lot of furniture flipping and my favorite paint (at the moment) is chalk paint. The coverage is great and easy to use - very little prep (no sanding). I would recommend starting with Waverly brand chalk paint, buy it in Walmart in the craft section. So many colors and is only $6 a bottle. You can lightly sand in between each coat and then seal with a water-based polycrylic (I like MinWax in the blue can).

I think it depends on what you plan on using the furniture for. Kitchen tables and family room coffee tables may not hold up to chalk paint.
