Lots of people use latex paint for furniture, including me! I know of chalk paints made for furniture that don't require roughing up the surface and priming, but need a wax coat after. I think it just depends on the look you are going for. :)
You can use latex enamel for furniture- left over trim paint. You really don't want flat paint as it cannot be scrubbed.
