Absolutely! Clean thoroughly, prime, paint, and then polyurethane them. Let them cure for at least a week before setting things on them permanently, I don't have a pic right now, but I recently painted my kitchen countertops (originally pink--uugghhh-) to look like black soapstone. They're beautiful.

They are doing this every where today even in apartments. check your local store Home Depot of Lowe's for more info....

There is a product on the market that makes it look like stone that is nice. Check it out before just painting.
