Only if the grain is raised or other imperfections because any imperfections will show once painted. Most critical to your end product is to remove any residue and coat with primer.Helpful Reply -

Before painting any wood furniture, it is always best to sand first. Depending on what type of wood it is and what type of finish it has on it now, will determine how much sanding.Helpful Reply -

Yes you should, esp if you are changing from wood stain/lacquer/varnish to paint. After sanding, wipe wood down with damp cloth, let dry and apply primer, then paint. Go for it!Helpful Reply -

It depends on what kind of paint you are planning on using. If you choose not to sand, you need to first paint on a primer that will allow the paint to grip the surface and not just rub off. Chalk paint does not require sanding before painting. http://naturalmommie.com/2013/11/how-to-7-easy-steps-to-refinishing-old-furniture-without-sanding-using-eco-friendly-annie-sloan-chalk-paint-before-after-old-dresser-to-media-center/Helpful Reply -
