I have used linseed oil and turpentine, look like new.
Just done mine with a 'Hard Wax Oil' and they look good.

Chalk paint can be applied without having to sand first. They just need cleaned with warm soap and water first. Even if a cabinet looks clean, it will have oils from hands on it. If you need a recipe to make your own chalk paint please ask. You can also buy chalk paint prepared at home improvement stores.
