How to distress latex semi gloss cabinets

The house we bought has horribly painted kitchen cabinets done in white latex paint. I would like to antique/distress them. Can I sand them a bit and use a wax? Do I just use dark paint? How do I seal? Thank you

Here is few idea.. cheese cloth.. get an accent color. brush in one direction only you might want to test like the inside of the cabinet door to see what you like best.. paint on.. and give a minute or two ( do not let it dry) and start to wipe off.. not all but some.. or use a dry brush .. if you like the look continue, then use come sealer.. stencil something creative like get some pretty leaves outside and roll over them with some other color and then press on slowly peal off.. think out of the box.. maybe some tin in the middle and new handles.. good luck..

Lisa, it would help to see a picture of what you have now and an inspiration picture. If by horribly, you mean a sloppy paint job, then you'll more than likely have to sand down until the current paint is smooth before you start to change them.
