Aif you dont want to donshiplap maybe wall paper would be easier. Hand painting wood grain knots and board lines would be quite labor-intensive.

If your not a very good painter you can buy prepasted wallpaper that looks like real barn wood. It comes in several colors. Barn red ,weathered grey and brown tones. It looks great. My friend did a room in the barn red and used a border that has a country star design.

I never painted a whole wall to look like barn wood, but I did paint a garden shed on my wall that looked like barn wood. My wall is antique white, I drew the garden shed using a yard stick and a pencil. I had a good picture of one that I used as inspiration. I painted the garden shed a weathered blue/grey. Then I used a darker grey to make the lines to look like boards. Then I used a stencil sponge to smudge it up and make it look like old wood. I used several bottles cheap stencil paint that you get at the craft stores to paint my barn wood shed. The paint cost $1.00 for each bottle. They come in lots of colors too. You can use cheap sponge brushes also.

I hope this helps you. Good Luck. PS It wasn't hard to do.
