Should I paint this ceiling?

I have a sun room with untreated cedar ceiling. It has some water damage along chimney line. The chimney has been removed. I don't know whether to paint or not, nor what color or finish? Any suggestions would help. My husband is against painting but gives no other suggestions. Thanks
Lillian: what a pretty space! ...yes, I do think the wood has to be painted. ...that is WAY easier than refinishing all that wood! Color: cream
Your wall could have been mine. We did decide to paint our rough sawn cedar ceiling shortly after we moved in. Then finally several years later whitewashed the massive brick wall. Actually posted the whitewash project "massive brick fireplace wall whitewash success"

Oh, dear! I love the wood and hope you're able to save it without covering over with paint. Not being able to see the entire room, is there any way to paint the damaged area without doing all the wood? Is there a natural "break" where you can transition from paint to wood? If not, I guess paint is your only option.
Personally I'd paint it. BUT my thought is WHAT LOOK DO YOU WANT ?? Paint would give it a more fresh and lighter look, keeping it dark will give it more of a older cabin-den feel.. I have found as I've gotten older (now retired) I want more light and freshness. ESPECIALLY living in a northern area where many winter days are gloomy.. Southern areas with more sun that may not be a factor.. BTW my husband was dead set on painting ANY wood- regardless of condition or appearance.. must be a guy thing
Sand lightly & apply a very light stain & repeat til desired almost matching shade is desired
I agree with painting. Off white, cream, Will brighten the space. Way too much work to sand, stain, and seal. Definitely prime with Kilz primer. I would not paint the beam.
