I understand your hesitation! I did paint mine!
I had 3 colors left over from another project!
1st I cleand the brick with vinegar and water with a good brush let dry.
2nd painted the whole brick including grout with the lightest color. Let dry I used a roller and a brush for this
3rd you will need 2 cello sponges I got at dollar store or walmart cut them to size of brick.
4th dip the sponge in to a tray with the paint of your choice scrape off some and start stamping just on brick go till you get the effect you want. I went from the full amount to the lightest of each dip
If you want to go back and add more you can after it dries
it took about 3 to 4 days to complete

Just do it! It would look great and brighten your space! (And you can always do a white-washed effect if you want some of the rustic brick to show through!)
