My kitchen table is not real wood, the finish is ruined from cleaning

what can I paint it with or can I poly it, I cannot sand it because it takes off the wood look.

I would think that is the finish is already ruined, and you want to paint it, you should go ahead and sand lightly so the paint has something to grip. then use a non-yellowing poly for durability.
