What can I use to line, or seal off, a concrete bird bath?

Question

I have a concrete bird bath that I love. But when it is filled with water it leaches some kind of red material from the concrete itself into the water. I feel this maybe bad for bathing birds and not good to drink, so I have not put water in it.
Is there some material I can line this bird bath with that won't harm the birds and seal off the concrete?

You might try a good quality oil based masonry sealer or the other option is to use a product I know only by name. It's called Flex Seal. It's basically a spray vinyl coating. Flex Seal is one brand and I believe Rustoleum markets the stuff under it's name as well. You're limited in color choices although I think its also available in clear but from what I've read the stuff is pretty amazing. I've seen Flex Seal at Lowes and the Rustoleum brand at Home Depot. You might want to try concrete patch or liquid nail. I have used both on small projects like yours.

If you want a decroative buy some small tile and thin set. Adhere the tile in whatever design you like with the thin set then mortar them in. The thin set will fill the cracks and it will be a whole new bird bath.
