Fill the nail holes with spackle. You can buy it pre-mixed. Apply with a putty knife, let dry, sand, apply more spackle if you need to. Repeat sanding. Then prime and paint or cover with wallpaper.
Renters hack....toothpaste. White school glue.
I use Polyfilla for small jobs like nail holes. It comes in small convenient tubes.

You can fill small holes with spackle on plastered walls.
You may want to use Joint compound to fill holes on drywall or sheetrock.

The spackle mentioned above works very well, however it is imperative that you get it flush with the wall. What I do is take a small amount of spackle, roll it into a little ball, then use it like an eraser.
