There are metal/plastic corner beads used to protect the drywall edges from damage.... I have seen the tape method used... but it does not protect the drywall as well as the corner bead... if you are putting a molding or trim at the corners... the bead may provide a better surface to nail into.... most brads or finish nails do not hold well into just drywall... and the tape will not add strength to that area.
I hope this helps:

Perhaps this will help answer your question. It is the only thing I have found which mentions what they used to do.
One cost saving method is to use metal corner bead for drywall. For more than 50 years metal corner bead was the standard. It was easy to install and it lasted. When modern finishing methods started to include drywall and not just lathe and plaster, Builders continued to use metal corner bead as there was no better alternative. Fortunately, that has changed. WWW.GRABBERMAN.COM offers a product called NO-COAT corners.

yes, you can use the tape rather than the metal corner pieces. It is the olde timey way. It was found to not hold up and that’s when the metal came in. Now there are other types of products used. But you are 100% correct!
