Hi Annette, this article shows you how to patch based on what kind of crack you have and where it's located. https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/walls-and-ceilings/how-to-repair-cracks-and-holes-in-drywall
I am assuming there is nothing structural going on with the wall and the 'crack' is just that. I use DAP DRYDEX spackling (available at Home Depot). First, if it was a nail hole, I would tap the hole softy with a hammer to make it as smooth as possible before using the spackle. You will need a good putty knife. I have several sizes, however, a 1" or 1 1/2" one should work. Put a small amouht of spackle on with the putty knife and, using the putty knife, smooth it out as much as possible. Let it dry - the spackle will go on 'pink' and turn white when it dries (if you use what I recommended). Once it is dry, carefully sand the spackle until when you run your fingers over it, it is smooth. Wipe away excess powder that occurs when you sand. I always put a primer on this patch before I paint the walls. It doesn't have to be 'primer,' it can just be the same paint that you will be using on the walls. Good luck!!
You can purchase sheetrock putty at Lowes or Walmart. You put it over the crack rather heavy. Then you scrap the extra off. After it dries, you use sandpaper to sand over it to make it smooth.
