I bought this wood dinning room set about 10 years ago. For some reason the wax applied from the factory is coming off in some area, resulting that in the bottom the wood is beautiful and shining. if I scrape it with my finger nail It comes off. can someone tell how can I remove the wax without having to strip the whole table. Thank u

That is not wax. It possibly could be lacquer, shellac,, or varnish .

    Testing the Finish

If the finish you're trying to remove isn't varnish, you may be able to strip it with a solvent and sidestep the trouble of using caustic chemicals. You can often recognize varnish by looking at the finish -- it tends to be heavy, is often amber in color and you may see brush strokes, which are usually absent in lighter finishes. If you aren't sure, rub a small amount of denatured alcohol on the finish; if that softens it, the finish is shellac. Use lacquer thinner in the same way to test for lacquer. If the finish resists both solvents, it's polyurethane or alkyd varnish. Depending on what the finish is you will need to strip it off and apply a new finish.

You can remove the finish with a cool citristip-saran wrap trick!
