How do I pick foam density to use in replacing dining room chair seats

There are three foam densities and my seats require a smaller piece for center of chair seats and a larger piece for the whole seat. What is the standard? Low density is not comfortable, so that's out, but medium and high densities are more comfortable but still feel wrong when sat on. Is there some other ingredient I'm missing, maybe????

You need to cover the foam with sufficient batting. Check out some websites with videos on this topic, done by professional upholsterers.

When I was doing upholstery, we always had 2 layers. High density in the bottom, (usually 3-4 inch), covered by a softer density, (usually 2 inch),stretched over top. Once one is glued in place with foam glue, fit the second piece, and the spray the glue between the 2 pieces. When stretching the cover, use silicon spay on the top layer of foam. Heat your cover in a dryer first, so fabric can be easily stretched.. Then staple away.

Ha! silicone spray. Don't know if original seats had that, but will look for some. Heating in dryer would not have occurred to me. Between you, Ted, and Olivia, I think this is going to work out. Thanking both of you.
