How do I remove the shiny finish from a veneer table?

I have a dining room table with a shiny veneer layer. I can see that it's just a thin layer covering what looks like a wood composite underneath. Is there a way to remove the shininess without destroying the whole layer? The veneer coating looks like wood grain but I am not sure it is.
