How to fix damaged rattan?

Cindy

I have not been able to find replacement rattan for less than $200 and I only paid that for the whole bed! I want to stain this piece a darker stain and am not sure what to do with it. The room is plum, grey and white. Thanks for any help!
The main damage.
The frame around it.

Thank You Janet! I found another supplier on there that didn't come up on Google that I can get what I need cheaply to replace it!

I bought a really nice chair for very little money because there was a hole in a small part of the rattan. I snipped two pieces from a crochet doily, and hot glued them over the break ( one piece for the actual break, and one piece on the other side to make it look symmetrical...) then I stained the whole chair, crochet included. Only someone looking for it would know.

It is a daunting task, but can be done with patience. ***** http://homeguides.sfgate.com/repair-rattan-ch...

Thanks, the weave on this is so small, I don't think I could do it!

I'm thinking if you wove just the hole part, with wicker/rattan product, just tucking in the ends to the back (I would leave them a bit too long), and then glued a strong canvas patch on the back to hold it in place. The canvas patch would stop it shifting about and the ends coming loose. Maybe, perhaps, just an idea.

I can't get at the back, it's on there like upholstery with foam behind it.

how about rattan paper plate holders -same shade or stain, as patches for area - put on both sides of hole with strong glue/ cement-use small piece aluminum foil & squeeze together till slightly tacky. trim any overage with nail clippers or sewing scissors.

If I can find one I think I have seen placemats with this weave...

I have done something similar to Cwhitaker's suggestion. You will need to make a square on the headboard that is around the hole by removing the rattan in the square. You will need to weave a new square and tuck the ends into the existing rattan and glue in place. If you cannot do this, take a small square from the bottom of the headboard where the mattress or pillows will hide the damage. Your dark paint will not make this area of notice. The key is to determine and outline the square to remove existing rattan and remove a good piece from the bottom a little bigger. Once everything is painted, you will not be able to see the flaws unless you are looking at it up close.

That is a good idea, I might be able to take a replacement piece from another part of the bed! Thanks!

I would find a fabric, paper, napkin, anything with a pattern you liked, a picture, a flower, something you could cut out of whatever you find, you like. Then randomly or in some pattern or way you like, modepodge then on, then finish with a coat or polyurethane...make it something new!

Yes you can. You order the weave online. They have a chart for the tight weave. It sells by the yard. Really easy to work with. Measure the perimeter for the spline.

I did find it but it wasvery expensive. One of the other posters gave a link with a very reasonable supplier.

The bed you have pictured was very expensive new. You got a great deal. Pages 61-63 in the Van Dykes catalog may have what you need. You need to reweave without removing anymore surface than is absolutely necessary keeping the damaged area to a minimum. Let us all know how it turns out.

Thanks, I didn't know that it was an expensive piece, I just liked the shape and the detail of the wood. I guess I did get a deal then!
