Just make sure that whatever you fill the cracks with will tolerate the heat generated and that it is not flammable.
Go to your local home improvement stores and ask the associate in that department what to use. There are tubes of mortar just for that. We did that with the back of our fireplace, which is outside next to the driveway. We just removed some of the old mortar and replaced it with the new.
